Zalgo text stacks Unicode combining diacritical marks above and below each character to create a corrupted, overflowing visual effect. The name comes from a 2004 internet meme about a horror entity tied to textual decay. Each combining mark modifies the base character without creating a separate glyph — stack 20–30 marks on one letter and the text visually overflows its container. The style spread through Reddit, 4chan, and creepypasta communities before reaching mainstream social media as the look of 'cursed' content.
The combining marks in Zalgo text are drawn from Unicode's Combining Diacritical Marks block (U+0300–U+036F) and the Combining Diacritical Marks Supplement (U+1DC0–U+1DFF). These blocks exist to support legitimate language uses — acute accents in French, umlauts in German, tonal marks in Vietnamese — but have no limit on how many can be applied to a single character. Zalgo text generators exploit this by applying the maximum feasible number of combining marks, creating text that visually escapes its line and bleeds into surrounding content. This 'overflow' effect is intentional and is the defining visual feature of the style.
Zalgo text has distinct intensity levels that serve different purposes. Light Zalgo — 3–5 combining marks per character — creates a subtly unstable look that is still readable and works well for horror-themed usernames, Discord server names, and Halloween social posts where the effect should be noticed but not overwhelming. Medium Zalgo — 8–15 marks per character — creates strong visual chaos while the underlying words remain decipherable to a patient reader. Heavy or 'full' Zalgo — 20+ marks per character — produces nearly unreadable text where the visual texture is the entire point, used for shock-value posts, creepypasta formatting, and extreme aesthetic statements.
Modern social platforms and apps handle Zalgo text safely — they will not crash or behave incorrectly when displaying it. However, Zalgo text can cause rendering issues in some older or poorly optimised apps that weren't designed for extreme combining character stacks. In Discord specifically, heavy Zalgo in usernames can cause notification popups to appear visually distorted, which is valued as a feature by some users but frowned upon in professional servers. Many Discord server administrators use bots to filter out Zalgo usernames for this reason. For most mainstream social platforms — Instagram, Twitter/X, WhatsApp — Zalgo text displays correctly regardless of intensity.
